LIDAR Generated 3D Imaging Scan, Still Image Series, Video Installation

2021

Home is often understood as a refuge and a site of rest. Yet domestic spaces, though among the most familiar environments we inhabit, are rarely deemed worthy of meticulous consideration. Domicile draws from my own domestic life as source material for an intimate visual study of form and space, created during the COVID-19 lockdown using 3D scanning technology. The project examines how quarantine altered our collective relationship to home, transforming it from a place of refuge into one of confinement.

The work employs LIDAR, a laser-based scanning technology that generates point clouds and mesh maps of physical environments. Recently integrated into smartphones and tablets, LIDAR has entered the mainstream. I used this emerging tool to archive the commonplace while reflecting on stasis during a global crisis. The resulting scans are intentionally abstracted, recording volume and spatial relationships rather than detail.
